Kick-off event took place at the end of August
The joint project MIND(+) of the Frankfurt Road Transport Authority and the Frankfurt am Main Transport Company (VGF) creates the conditions for a multimodal, intelligent, sustainable and digital mobility offer in the city of Frankfurt am Main. The project enables the implementation of a real laboratory at the interface to the project MIND (Frankfurt New Mobility: Multimodal, Intelligent, Sustainable, Digital) of the VGF and is a prerequisite for a further implementation of an environmentally oriented traffic management. The multimodal real laboratory covers the overall mobility of a city, as it not only refers to motorized individual transport and public transport, but also considers local mobility, such as cycling and walking. MIND(+) is a funding project of the German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) as part of the funding program “Digitization of Municipal Transport Systems”. AlbrechtConsult GmbH was commissioned together with Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr GmbH (IAV GmbH) to handle two work packages of the project. AlbrechtConsult is contributing its many years of expertise in the field of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) to the project.
The aim of the project is to stabilize the traffic flow and optimize the implementation of multimodal travel chains. In addition, the communication between transport participants and the infrastructure is to be improved with the help of this project. First and foremost, an attempt is made to strengthen public transport, especially rail-based local passenger transport, by optimizing road traffic engineering. The capacities of local public transport are to be increased by increasing the frequency of service, and passenger and freight transport is to be increasingly shifted from road to rail, without this resulting in a loss of quality for the citizens. The implementation of these goals is intended to make traffic flow as efficiently and smoothly as possible in the future.
The installation of roadside units or roadside intelligent transport system stations (R-ITS-S) and the upgrading of control units at traffic signals, especially at intersections with public transport, will help to achieve these goals. At the central level, a link will be established between the Integrated Overall Traffic Control Center (IGLZ) and the city’s traffic signal control center with the VGF’s communications and traffic control computer.
On August 30, 2022, the official kick-off meeting was held with the City of Frankfurt, the Road Traffic Authority and the consortium consisting of AlbrechtConsult and IAV.
The content of the assignment for the consortium is the creation of a functional as well as the development of a technical C-ITS concept. The project will start with the determination of the current state, the design of a target picture and specification of a future target state as well as the analysis and evaluation of technical alternatives. Only after this preliminary work can the design of a roadmap for the implementation of the concept be started. In addition to the joint processing of the two work packages, AlbrechtConsult is responsible for project management in the consortium. The overall project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
